DESCRIPTION:
About the Position :
The Parks Maintenance Division is seeking self-motivated, hardworking individuals with good interpersonal skills to fill three vacant Maintenance Worker I positions. These positions will provide general maintenance of parks and athletic facilities with a primary focus on janitorial duties. Working evenings and weekends is required. (THIS POSITION IS REPRESENTED BY THE AFSCME UNION)

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to:
  • Maintenance Workers I are responsible for basic, general upkeep, repair and/or cleaning in and around city buildings, other structures, and properties.
  • Assist with maintenance activities associated with Parks facilities.
  • Perform basic pruning, fertilizing, transplanting and other associated horticultural tasks.
  • The safe operation of mowers, edgers, chainsaws and other associated maintenance equipment, and may also be trained on specialized equipment such as tractors, wood chippers, etc.
  • Punctual, regular and reliable attendance is essential for successful job performance.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of basic building, landscaping or building maintenance techniques.
  • Knowledge of basic safety procedures and precautions.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining small manual/power tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activity in all types of weather.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work as a member of a crew.
  • Ability to respond to citizen inquiries appropriately.
  • Demonstrated punctual, regular and reliable attendance is required.
Experience/Education:
  • One year's general work experience required.
  • Experience in parks landscape and/or building maintenance preferred.
  • Some positions may require the employee obtain special certification (such as Pesticide Applicators card or CDL) within timelines specified by the State of Washington or the City of Olympia.
Special Requirement:
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Drivers' License.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
Contacts:
  • Maintenance Workers I have daily contact with other crew members for the purpose of work coordination.
  • However, City crews often work in highly visible locations and may be required to respond to questions from interested citizens.
  • It is important for all employees to respond to citizens with tact and patience.
  • If questions cannot be answered on-site, the worker is responsible for referring the citizen to the Lead Worker or other Department staff for assistance.
Supervision:
  • None.
Accountability:
  • The employee is accountable for performing assigned tasks in a quality, timely, efficient manner.
Working Conditions: (Working conditions will vary by assignment.)
  • Maintenance Workers may work in hazardous areas, including street surfaces, rights-of-way, medians, ditches, pits and underground vaults; and around heavy equipment or potentially dangerous tools.
  • Assignments may be outside and may occasionally require work in inclement weather and/or dirty, wet noisy or cramped work sites.
  • This position requires the physical ability to perform manual tasks, and mobility to navigate all types of surfaces and terrain.
